Instagram's AI-generated profile label: who needs it and how to turn it on
On 31 August 2026, Instagram renamed its “AI creator” label to “AI-generated profile” and started limiting the reach of AI personas that don’t use it. If your account is built around an AI influencer, turn it on: it’s one toggle in Edit profile. Unlabelled AI profiles that Instagram detects can be made non-recommendable, which cuts reach to anyone who doesn’t already follow you.

What is Instagram’s AI-generated profile label?
A label that tells people the person featured on a profile is AI-generated rather than human. Instagram introduced it as the “AI creator” label and renamed it on 31 August 2026, according to its announcement on the Instagram creators blog. It sits on the profile, not on single posts.
You switch it on for the whole profile, but it doesn’t stay only there. Once it’s on, Instagram says the label appears “on their profile and alongside their content if their specific media doesn’t already have a label indicating that it was created or edited with AI” (Instagram, 31 Aug 2026, checked 2 October 2026). So a post that carries no AI label of its own still shows her profile label next to it.
Who needs the AI-generated profile label?
Accounts whose main persona is an AI-generated person. That’s every AI influencer account. Creators who appear as themselves and only use AI tools in their process don’t need it, per the announcement. If a real person runs the account but the face on it is generated, it’s an AI-generated profile.
| Account | Needs the label? |
|---|---|
| An original AI character as the face of the account | Yes |
| A real creator who edits photos or writes captions with AI | No |
| A brand page that sometimes posts AI images | No profile label; post-level AI labels still apply |
How do you turn on the AI-generated profile label?
It takes about ten seconds. You switch it on once in Edit profile, and from then on it shows on her profile for everyone who visits. Do it before you post her first photo, so the account never spends a day unlabelled. In the Instagram app, from your profile:
- Tap Edit profile.
- Find the AI-generated profile toggle and switch it on.
- Save, then check the label shows on your profile.
Instagram’s wording is “editing their profile and toggling on AI-generated profile”. If you don’t see the toggle yet, update the app.
Does the label hurt your reach?
The label isn’t what gets limited; skipping it is. Instagram says creators who don’t label their AI-generated profiles may see limits to their reach, and detected unlabelled profiles can be made non-recommendable. That means no Reels, Explore or suggestions to people who don’t follow you yet, which is where a new account’s growth comes from.
So the choice isn’t “label and lose reach” against “no label and keep it”. It’s “label” against “risk being non-recommendable”. If her reach has already dropped, here’s how to check whether Instagram is limiting your AI account.
What if your account was labelled or limited by mistake?
Check Account Status in the Instagram app. That’s where Instagram says appeals go. If you’re a real person using AI tools only, you can appeal there. If your profile features an AI-generated person, the fix is to turn the label on, not to appeal.
How do you grow an AI account with the label on?
The same way as without it, just honestly. The label changes nothing about what works on Instagram; it only removes the risk of being hidden from people who don’t follow you yet. These are the basics the course’s growth phase teaches, and none of them depend on hiding anything:
- Warm up for a week. Simple bio, no link in bio for the first 7 days, 10 to 20 minutes a day of natural scrolling in your niche.
- Post from your phone, not a scheduler, in the first weeks.
- Phone-photo style. Everyday places, phone-camera shots. Studio-looking portraits read as fake.
- Rhythm: a reel and a carousel every 2 days, stories daily, a story with your link every 3 days.
- Carousels: several photos per post from one outfit and place. They earn more impressions and keep the face consistent.

What about the rest of Meta?
Meta puts “AI info” labels on AI-generated posts across Facebook, Instagram and Threads when it detects industry-standard AI markers or when you disclose it, and asks you to disclose photorealistic AI video and realistic AI audio (Meta’s labelling policy). Leave AI markers in your files rather than stripping them. Every other platform’s rules are in the AI influencer rules guide.
The two labels do different jobs. AI info is decided post by post; the profile label covers the whole account and you switch it on once. Meta changed AI info in September 2024: for content it detects was only modified or edited with AI tools, the label moved to the post’s menu, while content it detects was generated by AI keeps the label on the post (Meta, update of 12 September 2024).
| AI info (post label) | AI-generated profile label | |
|---|---|---|
| Where it shows | On one post, or in its menu if Meta detects the post was only edited with AI | On the profile, and next to posts that have no AI label of their own |
| What triggers it | Industry-standard AI markers in the file, or your disclosure when you post | You toggle it on in Edit profile |
| Since | 1 Jul 2024 (renamed from “Made with AI”) | 31 Aug 2026 (renamed from “AI creator”) |
For an AI influencer, turn the profile label on once, and use Meta’s AI disclosure when you post photorealistic AI video or realistic AI audio: Meta said in February 2024 that it “may apply penalties” if people don’t.
What can go wrong?
- You skip the label to “protect reach”. That’s exactly the group Instagram limits.
- You strip AI metadata from images. Disclosure is the rule everywhere now, and stripping markers works against it.
- You post 20 times in week one. New accounts that act like bots get treated like bots. Warm up first.
- The link goes up on day one. Wait 7 days of normal activity.
- Your character resembles a real person. That breaks rules the label can’t fix. Make her original.
